The monthly rewards for AFO come in the form of... extra experience for your account.
The main reason why I am not currently pursuing the level cap right now is because it is a lot more work than it is worth at the moment; when you are maintaining a high KDR, people tend to leave games more often and leave you with emptied out rooms. Even as early as level 2x (i.e. 20-29) I would experience people actively avoiding games where I am playing against them. (Note: Some of these people that actively avoid fighting me have no problem fighting alongside me)
So who benefits most from and who are most likely to get monthly rewards?
Experienced players...
1. who play the game a long time.
2. with low-mid KDRs.
3. with access to easy-kill weapons.
Let's take a look at an example.
Last month's and current monthly leader is NOVICE
NOVICE has a 1.51 KDR for his account overall and 1.91 KDR for the month. We're not looking at the kind of player who would be so dominant in a game that they could clear out entire rooms. At level 53, he certainly has all of the available weapons in the game. In terms of games played, he has already logged in over 500 games since the start of August.
To put that into perspective, let's assume that all 500 games are 5:00 long. 2,500 minutes = 41.6 hours of gameplay in nine days. That gameplay log can only increase with longer room times.
But NOVICE isn't necessarily winning all his games. In fact, as of typing this post it's 254 wins to 251 losses, almost perfectly 50-50.
So what am I trying to say, tl;dr?
Basically, the monthly rewards currently only serve to push the most active players into situations where they are gradually less able to play in rooms. There is no real benefit to being that person that invests days into an online browser game except getting closer to bragging rights for being number one on the experience leaderboard (protip: There are no bragging rights for being number one. Being number one right now is being number 8 due to hackers.)
